Anum Uzair wins Galiyat 60K Ultramarathon, becomes symbol of endurance for
Anum Uzair emerged as the champion of the women’s category at the prestigious Galiyat Mountain Trail 60K ultramarathon, completing the grueling 60-kilometer race in 12 hours and 57 minutes. Her victory, alongside her husband and fellow mountain athlete Uzair Ahmed, has solidified the couple’s status as pioneers in high-altitude sports and ultra-endurance events. The race, held on July 20, 2025, is part of the globally recognized UTMB World Series, a premier international trail-running circuit that qualifies athletes for the UTMB Mont-Blanc Finals in France. Certified by both UTMB and the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), the Galiyat 60K race challenged participants with over 3,000 meters of elevation gain across some of northern Pakistan’s most breathtaking and punishing mountain terrain. The course began at 5 am from Thandiyani, winding through iconic landscapes and natural landmarks. Runners ascended both Miranjani and Mushkpuri Tops, traversed forested ridgelines, crossed the famed Pipe Trail, and passed through the historic Khaira Gali tunnel, before concluding at Khaira Gali. This diverse mix of rugged mountain ascents, dense alpine forests, and heritage trails tested even the most seasoned runners. While Anum Uzair’s victory is a landmark achievement in Pakistan’s emerging ultra-endurance scene, it is part of a broader journey she shares with Uzair Ahmed, a practicing barrister and seasoned mountaineer. Together, the Lahore-based duo have built a reputation for redefining what is physically and mentally possible for Pakistani athletes. Their resume includes summiting 8,000-meter giant Manaslu, Broad Peak, Minglik Sar, and completing the challenging Hispar Pass traverse, all milestones few in the region have achieved. More than just athletes, Anum and Uzair represent a growing spirit of resilience and adventure in Pakistan’s youth. Anum, a dedicated gym champion and endurance athlete, continues to break stereotypes and set new benchmarks for women in high-performance outdoor sports. The Galiyat 60K, as part of the UTMB World Series, carries global significance. Designed to localize the experience of the iconic UTMB Mont-Blanc, the event celebrates fair play, environmental responsibility, and local cultural immersion. It offers Pakistani athletes direct exposure to the international trail-running standard, while also providing qualification pathways to global championships. By excelling on such a platform, Anum Uzair and Uzair Ahmed have not only etched their names into Pakistan’s endurance sport history but have also brought global attention to the country’s untapped potential in trail running and mountaineering. Their story is one of partnership, perseverance, and pushing the boundaries of what Pakistanis can achieve on the world’s highest trails.
