Lionel Messi shares opinion on concept of statistics in football

Lionel Messi has shared his opinion on the concept of statistics, saying that he doesn’t care about statistics; he plays the game to enjoy and live it.
Argentina’s captain is a legend of the game of football. He won 10 La Liga titles, four Champions League crowns and three Club World Cups in Club football, all with Barcelona. Messi currently plays for Inter Miami after two years with Paris Saint-Germain.He has also captained Argentina during a FIFA World Cup victory in 2022.He held an interview with SportsCenter on ESPN, where he revealed that he does not care about the statistics despite their importance in the current era of football.
“People today focus a lot on statistics, and personally, I don’t really like statistics. I don’t think I must score or assist just to reach a record or surpass someone. I live the game and enjoy it,” Messi said.
He added that he likes to be decisive and involved in the flow of the match; the records automatically happen when you perform.
“I like to be decisive and involved in the flow of the match — but I don’t play for stats, and I’ve never given them importance. Everything happened naturally, not because I was chasing numbers or trying to surpass anyone. Things simply happened because they happened”, he added.
Lionel Messi is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. He has a plethora of records to his name. In his most recent appearance for his current club, Inter Miami, he recorded the 405th assist of his career, surpassing Pelé’s record assist tally.
