Victorian government cracks down on taxis and rideshares ahead of Melbourne Grand Prix weekend

Web Desk :

The Australian Grand Prix this weekend is expected to attract more than 400,000 people to Melbourne from across Victoria, interstate and overseas. With crowds of that size, thousands will rely on taxis and rideshare services to and from the event safely.

The Victorian Government has announced a compliance operation through Safe Transport Vic – CPV & Bus across the four days of the event. Officers will be checking driver accreditation, vehicle standards, meters and the new QR codes that allow passengers to report issues if something goes wrong.

Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams MP and Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos MP have both acknowledged that around large events there have been concerns about the behaviour of a small number of drivers. The vast majority do the right thing, but when a few don’t it damages confidence in the whole system.

Having spent many years in the industry and in Parliament working on these issues, I know enforcement has an important role to play. But the bigger challenge remains making sure the commercial passenger vehicle system is fair, transparent and sustainable for both passengers and drivers.

Events like the Grand Prix shine a spotlight on the sector. Hopefully they also keep attention on the deeper issues that still need to be addressed.
