For the first time in Pakistan’s history, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has awarded the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) the Asia 12&U Team Competition, Regional Qualifying Event – South Asia 2021.
According to PTF spokesman, the event will be held at the international standards Plexipave courts of the PTF Complex, Islamabad, from September 13 to 18 under strict Covid SOPs. This is the first time in our history that an ITF Juniors Team Event has been awarded to Pakistan, and was made possible by the hectic and untiring efforts of PTF President Salim Saifullah Khan and the PTF Management.
Seven South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and hosts Pakistan will compete in the boys and girls team events, each team consisting of 3 players and a non-playing captain. ITF Development Officer for South Asia Jonathan Stubbs will be the ITF Representative for the event. The top 2 teams in both the categories will qualify from the South Asia Regional Qualifying Event to the Finals of 2021 ITF Asia 12&U Team Competition to be held in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan during the week of 22nd November 2021.
Following the 2xITF Juniors Tournaments, and the Davis Cup Tie, in the first quarter of this year, this will be the third ITF-awarded event this year, to be followed by two more ITF Juniors and ATF Juniors before year-end. Final dates for these are awaited from the ITF and the ATF. As per the vision of PTF President Salim Saifullah Khan and the executive committee, the PTF started focusing more on the development of junior players, especially the 14&U and 12&U categories. This effort will continue by also hosting more national ranking juniors in near future, so that players, coaches and parents may be exposed to international and national tennis events.
