Pakistan’s star athlete Arshad Nadeem has been accorded hero’s welcome when he returned home after finishing fifth in the men’s javelin throw event at the Tokyo Olympics.
Punjab Sports Minister Rai Taimoor Khan Bhatti and Athletic Federation of Pakistan (AFP) President Maj Gen (r) M Akram Sahi and Col (r) Asif Dar, coaches, officials and a large number of sports enthusiasts received the hero at the Allama Iqbal International Airport. They cheered for the athlete and raised slogans to show their love and respect for the nation’s hero.
In a tweet, Punjab Sports Minister Rai Taimoor said that all national heroes must be appreciated and given the respect they deserve. “Arshad has made us proud and got Pakistan global recognition.” Talking about embarking on a ‘new sports journey’, he said that athletes must be provided with the necessary environment so that they may make the nation proud at international level. “The government will take all possible steps in this regard,” he added.
Talking to media at the airport, Arshad Nadeem thanked all the people who prayed for him. “I got fame in the world owing to people’s prayers. I will overcome my shortcomings and play the best game in future.” He also vowed that he would not disappoint his admirers with his performance in future. “I worked hard and came fifth,” he said. The athlete also said he is grateful to the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and Sports Board Punjab (SBP) and expressed satisfaction with the bodies for patronising him.
Recognising his efforts in the sports, the Punjab government has announced a cash reward of Rs one million for Arshad Nadeem for his stellar performances in the Tokyo Olympics. Punjab Sports Minister Rai Taimoor Khan Bhatti said, “Arshad Nadeem is the first Pakistani track and field athlete, who directly qualified for Olympics.” The Punjab Sports Minister said that Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar will hand the cash prizes to Arshad Nadeem along with Olympian Talha Talib and mountaineer Shehroz Kashmir for making every Pakistani proud with their stellar performances
