Pakistan’s Irfan Bhatti and Murad Ali qualified for the pre-quarter-finals of Badminton event in the Commonwealth Games 2022 after beating their South African opponents by 2-0 here on Thursday.
In the Men’s Doubles Round of 32 clash, Irfan Bhatti and Murad Ali faced South Africa’s Jarred Elliot and Robert Summers. The Pakistan duo was sensational against Elliot and Summers and beat them in straight sets.
After a tough contest between the two sides, Irfan and Murad managed to win the game by 19-21 and 17-21, qualifying for the pre-quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Games 2022.
Irfan and Murad will clash with India’s Rakireddy Satwik Sairaj and Shetty Chirag Chandrashekhar on Friday (tomorrow).
However, Pakistani badminton players, including Irfan and Murad, lost their respective Singles matches today.
In Women’s Singles, Pakistan’s Ghazala Siddique clashed with Jamaica’s Tahlia Richardson in the round of 32. The Pakistani player lost after a good performance as the Jamaican won the match by 21-15 and 21-15.
Meanwhile, in the Men’s Singles round of 32 match, Irfan Bhatti was up against Malaysia’s Tze Young NG. However, the 29-year-old was handed a straight-set defeat by Young, with scores of 21-10 and 21-9.
In another Men’s Singles fixture, Murad Ali competed with Singapore’s Jia Heng Teh. However, he also lost the match as Teh dominated Murah, beating him by 14-21 and 16-21.
Lastly, Mahoor Ali, who is Pakistan’s top female badminton player, also lost her round of 32 match against India’s Akarshis Kashyap. Mahoor was tough to beat in the first set as it ended in 20-22, but unluckily she retired hurt in the second set, allowing Kashyap to win the match.
