LAHORE: Vice-Chairman Sports Board Punjab Rao Zahid Qayyum said holding back-to-back inter-division sports championships are part of Sports Board Punjab’s campaign to trace fresh talent for the upcoming mega sports events; he said this while talking to media at the closing ceremony of First Quaid-e-Azam Inter-Divisional Table Tennis (M&F), Weightlifting (M) and Powerlifting (F) Championships 2021 at Nishtar Park Sports Complex (NPSC) on Wednesday.

Secretary Youth Affairs and Sports Fuad Hashim Rabbani, Director General Sports Punjab Adnan Arshad Aulakh, Director Admin Javed Chohan, Director Sports Hafeez Bhatti, Deputy Director Chand Perveen, Divisional and District Sports Officers and a large number of players and officials were also present at the grand closing ceremony.

Vice-Chairman Sports Board Punjab Rao Zahid Qayyum, Secretary Youth Affairs and Sports Fuad Hashim Rabbani and Director General Sports Punjab Adnan Arshad Aulakh distributed cash prizes and medals at the closing ceremony where all the participating teams and officials were also introduced to them.

Vice-Chairman Sports Board Punjab Rao Zahid Qayyum appreciated the sports skills of participating teams and said that these sports championships are basically a talent hunt programme. “We are holding regular inter-division sports events to unearth fresh sports potential from all nine divisions of the province”.

Replying to a question, Vice-Chairman Sports Board Punjab Rao Zahid Qayyum said that the sports activities played a key role in the promotion of positive and healthy lifestyle in the society. “Punjab govt is giving top priority to promotion of sports in the province. We are providing modern sports facilities to talented youth of all the nine divisions”.

“Sports Board Punjab will also organize traditional sports events once the coronavirus situation gets under control. This championship is also part of preparations for the Punjab Games scheduled to be held in near future”.

While talking to the media, Secretary Youth Affairs and Sports Fuad Hashim Rabbani announced plans to hold the Punjab Games in April this year. “We will also organize the Inter-Division Women Hockey Championship later this month. Sports structure is also being expanded throughout the province to give youngsters maximum opportunities to express their talent”.

Answering a query, Secretary Youth Affairs and Sports Fuad Hashim Rabbani said a Sports Endowment Fund is also being established for the welfare of national sports heroes, champions and legends. “Right now we are focusing on organizing non-contact sports events as per directions of the Punjab govt. We organized several non-contact sports events such as hockey, athletics, archery, badminton, cycling and tennis etc in recent months”.

Director General Sports Punjab Adnan Arshad Aulakh, on this occasion announced that Sports Board Punjab will organize first-ever floodlit athletics event after the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) cricket tournament. “20 disciplines of athletics will be conducted during the mega event.

Director General Sports Punjab Adnan Arshad Aulakh said Sports Board Punjab has provided an ideal platform to talented youth by organizing sports events of nine games in a short span of time in recent months. “We are also refurbishing several existing sports facilities in the province besides establishing new sports facilities in dozens of tehsils.

He also congratulated the winners and encouraged the next position holders.

Vice-Chairman Sports Board Punjab Rao Zahid Qayyum, Secretary Youth Affairs and Sports Fuad Hashim Rabbani, Director General Sports Punjab Adnan Arshad Aulakh, Director Admin Javed Chohan, Director Sports Hafeez Bhatti, NPSC Administrator Mustafa Shah, Incharge Media Cell Abdul Rauf Roofi, Syed Omair Hasan, all Divisional Sports Officers were awarded souvenirs on this occasion.
